Your first and foremost goal after having sent in a job application is receiving an invitation for a job interview. At the interview, you’ll have the chance to introduce yourself in person, meet your potential future employer and convince them that you are the most qualified applicant.

Come prepared

The aim of most job interviews is a combination of assessing your skills and personality to see if you’re a good fit with the team. It’s also a chance for you to get a clearer idea of the job. Prepare by reading up on the company’s activities and the general state of the field you’ll be working in. Showing interest by asking questions is always appreciated.

Formal language

Professional situations ― and job interviews especially ― are handled formally in Germany. Introduce yourself with your first and last name, and address everyone else by their surnames. If your German language-skills allow for it, be sure to use the “Sie” form unless explicitly invited to do otherwise.

Money talks

Most employers request that you to include your preferred yearly gross salary already in your cover letter. If you haven’t done so yet, you may be asked about your "price tag" at the end of the interview. Inform yourself about the market beforehand and be ready to state a number. Too high, and they may assume you wouldn't be happy with the position. Too low, and you could end up with less than would be fair.

You’ll hear from us

After shaking hands and saying your goodbyes, the wait begins. You can expect a phone call if you’re hired or invited for a second interview. If you’re declined, it’s more common to receive an email or letter. Remember: you can always ask for feedback!
