Founded in 2006, HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU) is a unique university indeed ― it is the only university in Europe to focus solely on architecture and metropolitan development. HCU is located in the city's newest district, the HafenCity Hamburg. With its impressive architecture and design, the university and its surrounding areas are a unique environment in which to explore and experience first hand the issues with which the university is most concerned.
Degree programmes
Bachelor's and master's degree programmes in architecture, civil engineering, geomatics, and urban planning form the academic basis at HCU Hamburg, with the focuses of the programmes exploring growing problems that arise from urban environments. New courses of study (like the bachelor's degree course 'Metropolitan Culture' or the master's degree courses 'Urban Design' and 'Resource Efficiency in Architecture and Planning ― REAP') are excellent examples of the range of studies on offer at HCU.
Tuition fees and entry
The HCU Hamburg does not currently charge any tuition fees. Additionally, there are a number of scholarships available to both local and international students to help finance the various other costs of studying.
As far as language of study, HCU Hamburg already offers two master's programmes in English, with more to come.
Research
HCU Hamburg's research (German site only) focuses on built and urban transformations. Perspectives from natural sciences, engineering, planning and design, as well as cultural and sociological approaches, shape the exploration of the built environment at HCU Hamburg. Interdisciplinary research at HCU Hamburg is organised into teams of scientists; for example the CityScienceLab ― a cooperation with the Media Lab of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Other research groups at HCU Hamburg examine urban and regional strategies for adapting to climate change. By analysing the built environment through a large number of projects, HCU Hamburg’s research initiates dialogues about the future of urban development between science, politics, civil society and business.
