Apotheken, the German Pharmacies

In Hamburg, as in all of Germany, there is a clear distinction between Apotheken (pharmacies) and Drogerien (drugstores). While Drogerien sell all kinds of cosmetics, hygiene products and household utensils, the place to go for cold medicines and prescribed medications is the Apotheke. Keep an eye open for the bold red letter ‘A’ that indicates an Apotheke shop and can be found in every neighbourhood.

The big, bold letter ‘A’ refers to both the Greek word apotheke ‘store, depot’ and the Greek hero and god of medicine Asclepios, who is associated with a snake. This snake can also be found in the left half of the logo, embracing a medical goblet.

Every-day medicines for cough and cold relief or painkillers can be bought in Apotheken without prescription for the regular shop price, whereas stronger and more specialised medications require a prescription from a doctor for a standard prescription fee, usually €10. Many sweets that used to be considered medicine, such as dextrose pills or liquorice, are also sold in Apotheken shops.
