Hospitals in Hamburg
Hamburg has more than 35 hospitals, most of them providing both in-patient and out-patient medical care. The largest hospital in Hamburg is the UKE university hospital, which doubles as a university medical research and training centre. All other hospitals are managed either publicly, privately or by a religious or social service provider.
Care, Research and Training at UKE
The University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (German: Universitätsklinikum Eppendorf, UKE) is not only the largest hospital in Hamburg, but also one of the most important medical research facilities in northern Germany.
The UKE’s Medical Faculty, run in cooperation with Hamburg University, is the training centre for medical and dental students from all over the world and houses key facilities, such as the Medical Library and the Anatomical Collection. The UKE is also home to the Blood Donation Service.

Children's Hospital Altona
Since 1859, there has been a hospital in Altona that is for children only – that is to say, the patients there are all children; the medical and care staff are professionally trained adults, of course. In addition to providing care for premature and newborn babies and general paediatric care, this hospital specialises in infant and paediatric surgery and emergency care.

Religious and Social Care Providers
In the spirit of Christian charity, there are also numerous hospitals in Hamburg that are run by religious or social service providers. Some examples of these are Agaplesion Hospitals (Eimsbüttel, Bergedorf), the Albertinen-Krankenhaus (Schnelsen), the Evangelisches Krankenhaus Alsterdorf (Alsterdorf), the Marienkrankenhaus (Hohenfelde) or the Wilhelmsburger Krankenhaus Groß Sand (Wilhelmsburg).
The Israelitisches Krankenhaus (‘Israelite Hospital‘) in the Groß Borstel neighbourhood is the only hospital in Hamburg that was founded by the Jewish community in the 19th century, but it provides care for patients of all faiths.
Privately Owned Hospitals
Hamburg also has a remarkable selection of privately owned hospitals. Apart from the well-established corporate chains, such as Asklepios (Altona, Barmbek, Harburg, Langenhorn, Rissen, St. Georg, Wandsbek, etc.), Helios (Altona, Harburg), ATOS (City Centre) and Schön Klinik (Eilbek), there are also more regional hospitals, such as Alster-Klinik (Rotherbaum), BG Klinikum (Lohbrügge) or Park-Klinik (Blankenese).
