With the Corona-Warn-App - the voluntary COVID-19 contact tracing app - everyone who takes the safety and health of their fellow Hamburg residents seriously can help break infection chains and protect those around them. The app turns any smartphone into a warning system and informs you when you have been in contact with verifiably infected people, thus protecting you and your fellow human beings from further spreading the disease. And while you keep others safe, the app keeps your privacy safe as well. Everything is anonymous - the app doesn’t know your name, location or any other potentially identifying information.
The Corona-Warn-App digitally and anonymously documents encounters between two smartphones using Bluetooth technology to measure the distance and duration when people who have installed it meet or are in the same space. This way, the app can inform you quickly if, within the last two weeks, you have had contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19 and voluntarily and anonymously updated this information in the app. The app will not, however, warn you if you are about to come into contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, as this would be a violation of privacy restrictions and anonymity both between users and within the interface of the app.
The faster you get information about potential exposure, the less risk that other people become infected. That is why, in addition to hygiene measures such as washing hands, keeping a distance and everyday mask use, the app is an effective means of containing the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. The German federal government supports the app because it serves the protection and health of the community.
