Act, Play, Dance in Hamburg

Whether you simply enjoy practising with a group or can't wait to shine on stage, embrace your creative side and start acting or dancing in Hamburg.

Acting

Hamburg has two English-language amateur theatre groups: The Hamburg Players and The University Players. But don’t be fooled by their 'amateur' status: both groups are known for their high quality productions with talented actors, directors, and stage and lighting designers.

The Hamburg Players stage an entertaining mix of classic comedy and drama. Previous productions include Neil Simon's Rumors, R.L. Stevenson's Treasure Island, and Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Participation is based on membership. The Hamburg Players gather in their own clubhouse near Mundsburg, and shows take place at the Theater an der Marschnerstrasse.

The University Players are officially part of Hamburg University's Institute for Anglistics and Americanistics, but participation is open to everyone — student or not. The group stages two productions per year, ranging from classical to modern plays.  Past productions include George Orwell's 1984, Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and Joe Orton's What the Butler Saw. Rehearsals and shows take place in the Audimax auditorium on Hamburg University's campus.

Aspiring actors, stage managers or directors who speak German have some more options, e.g. Reeplayers, Amateur Theater Altona, or Thalia Amateur Theater.

Dancing

Feel the rhythm and join one of Hamburg’s many dancing workshops. Most classes take place in German, but depending on the type of instruction and your general level of dance experience, this might not be a problem. Don't be afraid to reach out to your instructor to check.

Beginners and advanced dancers alike can practice classical dance, jazz and ballet at schools like Tanzfabrik, Tanzatelier or Billie’s.

Swingwerkstatt and Dancealot are great options if you’re looking to dance swing, for example with Lindy hop or Charleston.

Tango enthusiasts can look at this Tango Calendar for upcoming dance evenings and events in Hamburg, or opt for lessons at schools like La Yumba, Tango Matrix or Tango Orange.

If you love Latin dancing, take a look at Salsa, bachata and merengue workshops at Latin Dance Academy, Salsa Diversion or SalsaHH. Show your moves at Latin dance nights in clubs and bars like La Macumba or Feuerstein.

Are you more into urban dancing? Join a HipHop course at Tybas Dance Center or On Stage Training Center. Young people ages 13 to 25 can practice breakdancing and other styles at the HipHop Academy.
