The beating heart of Hamburg, Hamburg-Mitte district stretches between the city’s western and eastern borders, encompassing Hamburg Central Station and no fewer than 19 city quarters. At the centre of it all are Altstadt (lit. 'Old Town') and Neustadt (lit. 'New Town'). Located within the old fortifications of Hamburg, these quarters contain most of the city’s landmarks, such as City Hall, St. Michael’s Church and the Landungsbrücken piers, as well as shopping areas Jungfernstieg, Neuer Wall, Mönckebergstrasse and Spitalerstrasse.
Museums
Within short distance of Hamburg Central Station are large museums like Kunsthalle, Deichtorhallen and Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe. On the station’s other side begins St. Georg, known for its particularly LGBTQI-friendly areas and multicultural atmosphere. East of the Alster, quarters Borgfelde, Hamm, Hammerbrook, Horn and Billstedt provide affordable living within easy reach of the city centre.
Elbphilharmonie
A short jaunt towards the northern shores of the Elbe river brings you to HafenCity: a brand new residential and business quarter featuring architectural highlights like the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg concert hall. Its modernity contrasts wonderfully with the historic warehouses of Speicherstadt - a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Along the shores of the Elbe are quarters Billbrook, Kleiner Grasbrook, Rothenburgsort, Steinwerder, Finkenwerder, Waltershof, Veddel and Wilhelmsburg - gaining in popularity for their relatively affordable housing prices and close proximity to the city centre.
St. Pauli nightlife
Perhaps Hamburg’s most famous quarter is St. Pauli: known for its football club and the Reeperbahn nightlife district. This is where The Beatles rose to stardom and where tourists and residents alike come to enjoy the good things in life, usually over a drink.
Last but not least there is Neuwerk: even though this tiny tidal island in the Wadden Sea is located some 120 km away from Hamburg proper, its approximately 32 residents fall under the authority of Hamburg-Mitte district.
