The administrative district Hamburg-Eimsbüttel, located in the city’s northwest, is home to around 260,000 inhabitants and contains nine quarters: Eimsbüttel, Rotherbaum, Harvestehude, Hoheluft-West, Lokstedt, Niendorf, Schnelsen, Eidelstedt and Stellingen.

With its historic residential buildings and tree-lined streets, the eponymous Eimsbüttel quarter is one of Hamburg’s most sought-after neighbourhoods. At its heart is the Osterstrasse shopping street, which is also the location of the yearly Osterstrasse festival. Foodies will have their tastebuds satisfied at the many restaurants, wine and cocktail bars, and delicatessen shops around Eppendorfer Weg.

The Harvestehude and Rotherbaum quarters along the banks of the Alster lake are characterised by large, historic mansions and broad avenues. This is where many of the city’s consulates are located, as well as the Hamburg School of Music and Theatre (HfMT). The Grindel area, in between Grindelberg avenue and Dammtor Station, is the historic Jewish quarter and houses the main campus of Universität Hamburg (UHH). Here you’ll find many shops, bars and eateries that cater to students, as well as Abaton cinema with its many English-language screenings and the Völkerkunde Museum of Ethnology.

Further west and northwest, the green quarters Hoheluft-West and Lokstedt provide a pleasant transition between the more urban parts of Eimsbüttel and the family-friendly suburbs of Eidelstedt, Schnelsen and Niendorf. This is where you’ll find the 1-km-long Isemarkt farmer’s market, the vast green area of Niendorfer Gehege, Hamburg’s oldest swimming hall Kaifu Bad and children’s favourite Hagenbeck’s Zoo.
