On July 21, 2015, the Federal Constitutional Court `` tipped '' the childcare allowance for formal reasons. The highest German court ruled that the federal government was not responsible for the care allowance. Rather, the federal states alone are responsible for a care allowance.
The childcare allowance has existed since 2013. It was paid to parents who did not take up any publicly funded childcare place for their two to three-year-old children.
Families to whom the care allowance was granted prior to the decision of the Federal Constitutional Court continue to receive the benefit until the end of the grant period; they do not have to repay anything. The so-called grandfathering applies to them. However, new applications can no longer be made because there is no longer a legal basis for them.
