Declare renunciation of German citizenship

Prerequisites

• You have German citizenship and at least one other nationality.
• Your permanent habitual residence is in Hamburg.
• If you are under 18 years old: You have the permission of the German family court to renounce your German citizenship.

Documents required

• Birth certificate
• current proof of possession of another nationality
• current registration confirmation
• German identity document
• for minors: approval of the German family court

• You can write an email to the responsible authority expressing your wish to renounce your German citizenship or contact the responsible authority via the service portal.
• You will receive an email with the required application form and a list of required documents. You can submit these digitally via the service portal.
• The responsible agency will review your application and may request additional documents from you. These can also be submitted via the service portal.
• If your application is approved, you will be given the waiver certificate.
  • Upon surrendering the certificate of renunciation, you will lose your German citizenship and your German passports will become invalid.
• If your application is rejected, you will receive a written rejection.
