Medical Service General Information

The medical assessment service prepares the medical reports for decisions regarding severely disabled persons and social compensation law. Further information can be found here.

Detailed description

The medical assessment service receives its assignments from the departments for severely disabled persons' law and social compensation law. This means that you cannot and do not need to commission the medical assessment service yourself. The responsible agency, to which you submitted an application for a severely disabled person's identity card or for benefits under social compensation law, commissions the medical assessment service. The medical assessment service then prepares an expert opinion, either based on your documents or – if necessary – after a personal examination. It is important not only what illness or diagnosis you have, but above all, how severely your limitations affect your life and your participation in everyday life.

Prerequisites

The responsible authority requires a medical statement to decide whether and to what extent you can be granted benefits under the law for severely disabled persons or the social compensation law.

Documents required

  • Valid identity card or passport
  • If applicable: Declaration of release from medical confidentiality
  • If applicable: Any medical or other medical records you may have

Deadlines

Depending on the specific circumstances, different deadlines may apply. The responsible authority will gladly provide you with more detailed information upon request.

Procedure

  • You have applied to the relevant authority for a benefit under the law for severely disabled persons or the social compensation law.
  • The relevant authority will review your application and decide whether a medical statement is required. This is the case in most instances.
  • The responsible office will forward your file to the medical assessment service.
  • The medical assessment service prepares a statement either based on the file or after an examination.
    • Should an examination be necessary, you will receive an invitation from the Medical Service.
    • In the report, the medical service makes a recommendation regarding the degree of your disability (GdB) or degree of impairment (GdS).
  • Once the report has been prepared, your file will be returned to the office that commissioned the report.
  • The responsible authority will send you a written notification stating your entitlement to benefits.

Processing times vary considerably from case to case. You can significantly expedite the process by submitting all relevant documents related to your medical conditions along with your application.
