Apply for exemption from the licensing requirement as an insurance intermediary.

Do you only want to broker insurance as a supplement to goods or services? Then you can apply for an exemption from the licensing requirement at the relevant Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK). Find out more here.

Detailed description

Generally, you need a license to work as a self-employed insurance agent. However, as a so-called product-related insurance agent, you can be exempted from this licensing requirement. To do so, you must submit an application to your local Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK).

You are considered an ancillary insurance intermediary if, in addition to your main business, you also broker insurance policies that complement the product. This means that the risk for which you broker insurance must arise directly from the product or service.

Example of such product-complementary insurance brokerage:

  • Arranging car insurance in connection with a car sale.
  • The arrangement of a life insurance policy as security when concluding a loan agreement.
  • The arrangement of transport insurance in connection with delivery services.

You must also register with the insurance intermediary register. You can submit the application at the same time as your application for a license to broker insurance.
