With the Senate decision to repeal the ordinance on disposal outside of waste disposal plants, the incineration of garden waste in private gardens and public facilities has no longer been permitted since October 18, 2017. This measure has the following objectives:

• An improvement in air quality in Hamburg through less fine dust
• A reduction in the impact of smoke pollution on the mostly densely populated neighborhood
• A further control of the biowaste streams to the Hamburg city cleaning for the production of energy and compost from biomass

The disposal of garden waste by burning is now a misdemeanor.

In order to dispose of garden waste, there is a bio bin almost everywhere in Hamburg. In addition, the city cleaning department accepts garden waste from private households up to 3 m³ per trip free of charge at all recycling centers and leaves are also collected directly from the property in special leaf bags during the leaf season.

The recycling of garden waste, eg by composting or mulching, is also permitted. The lighting of private traditional fires such as campfires, barbecues or Easter bonfires is also permitted, provided that the fire protection guidelines are observed. Only dry, natural wood is permitted for this. The large public Easter bonfires approved by district offices are still permitted as traditional bonfires.
