Death certificates, international

The registry office of the event location (death registry) is responsible for issuing civil status documents.

For current deaths, please select the service - death notifications.

Important notes

Documents required

  • In the case of a personal interview: ID cards or passports, old death certificate if available, proof of legal interest if applicable - data protection.
  • Civil status certificate that clarifies / proves the family relationship.

Collection is also possible upon presentation of a power of attorney. Relatives in a straight line (father / mother or daughter / son) receive the certificate even without power of attorney.

Please note

  • Telephone orders are not possible. The application can only be made in writing (letter post, e-mail, fax) or in person.
  • No information on the processing status can be given over the phone. Please contact the funeral home.
  • If you no longer know the location of the event registered in the registry office, please contact the general register of the Hamburg registry offices in writing. There you can find out which registry office has notarized the civil status case.
  • For civil status cases (birth, marriage, death) that have been certified in a Hamburg registry office since 2009, further certificates can be issued in all Hamburg registry offices.
These documents, which are issued by a registry office other than the certifying office, are provided with the addition - document according to § 67 paragraph 3 of the civil status law.
Important note: With this addition, documents are not recognized abroad, eg birth certificates for entry into the USA. They must be issued by the originally responsible registry office.
  • For death certificates of deaths older than 30 years, please contact the Hamburg State Archives (see link).
