Get information about rescue services and emergency calls

  •

The emergency rescue service provides rapid assistance in medical emergencies throughout Europe and can be reached by calling 112. For less urgent medical problems and requests for assistance, you can call the number 116 117 of the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians.

  •

Detailed description

The emergency number 112 is the Europe-wide number for the emergency services and fire brigade. It is available around the clock and connects you as a caller directly to the emergency control centre. Specially trained call takers and dispatchers work here, who receive emergency calls and initiate the necessary rescue measures.

Information

Prerequisites

There is a danger to life or other doubts about a person’s state of health.

You should call 112 in all life-threatening emergencies that require immediate medical attention. These include:

  • Cardiac arrest: When someone is unconscious and no longer breathing.
  • Serious accidents: traffic accidents, falls from heights, severe burns or drowning accidents.
  • Acute illnesses: Sudden severe chest pain, suspected stroke, severe allergic reactions, poisoning.
  • Serious injuries: deep cuts or stab wounds, severe bone fractures.
  • Complications of chronic diseases: worsening of the condition of known serious diseases such as asthma, diabetes or epilepsy.

It is important to note that 112 is for emergencies.

If you call the emergency number for less urgent medical problems and requests for assistance, this may block the availability of another emergency call.

Please note

116 117 is the number for the emergency medical service in Germany. You should dial this number if you need medical help outside of regular office hours, but it is not a life-threatening emergency. Examples of this are:

  • Acute but not life-threatening symptoms: fever, cold, minor injuries.
  • Conditions that cannot wait until the next regular consultation time: sudden deterioration of chronic diseases, acute pain.
  • Medical advice: If you are unsure whether a visit to the doctor is necessary.

Procedure

  • When you call 112, you will first be asked for your location and then the emergency control center employee will ask you a standardized question about the details of the emergency. This information is crucial so that the dispatchers can send the right help.
  • The rescue control center is responsible for coordinating operations and ensuring that rescue workers are on site as quickly as possible and can begin the necessary initial medical treatment. They work closely with hospitals and other emergency services to ensure seamless care.
  • Depending on the emergency, an ambulance (RTW), an emergency medical vehicle (NEF) or even a rescue helicopter will be dispatched.
  • The rescue services include not only initial medical care on site, but also safe transport to a suitable hospital. The rescue workers are specially trained to act competently and quickly in emergency situations and thus ensure the best possible care.
