Promotion of Hamburg’s private theatres

Institutional and project funding for private theatres of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg

  •

Detailed description

Hamburg has a large and lively private theater scene, which clearly surpasses other cities in terms of quality and diversity. With their classical to contemporary repertoire, Hamburg's private theaters play a large part in the city's cultural infrastructure and their programs also offer attractive cultural offerings for Hamburg's tourism industry. They are an indispensable addition to the offerings of the state theaters and are thus also an integral part of Hamburg's theater landscape. The Ministry for Culture and Media of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg is therefore aiming to maintain and strengthen the outstanding diversity of the private theaters through medium-term financial support by promoting Hamburg's private theaters.

Information

Prerequisites

All private theatres with their own venue in Hamburg are eligible to apply. The application must demonstrate that the objectives listed in the funding guidelines are being pursued and that
- regular performances (at least three days a week) based on a year-round schedule with around 100 performances per year
- the financial and earnings situation can be demonstrated over a period of at least three years,
- An occupancy rate of 50% of the tickets sold is achieved with appropriate entrance prices.

Grants will only be awarded to recipients who appear to be able to conduct their business reliably and properly and who are able to guarantee and prove that the funds are being used for their intended purpose. The grant should generally be limited to 30% of total income, and to a maximum of 85% for children's and youth theatres. Deviations are possible in justified cases.

Documents required

In addition to the necessary general information (name and address of the applicant), the application must contain in particular the following information:

  • realistic financing plan that takes into account all expenses and income related to the purpose of the grant; this also includes any own and third-party funds that may be used (e.g. sponsorship funds)
  • Project description (short version and long version)
  • Schedule and event date(s) and location(s)
  • Venue certificate
  • Short CV of the main project participants

Please note

- The scope and amount of the grant depends on the recommendation of the expert jury. In principle, efforts to find private and/or public sources of funding are required.
- At the same time, the overall financing of the project to be funded must be guaranteed, i.e. the financing of the expenses not covered by the grant through third-party funds.
- A further prerequisite for any type of funding is, on the one hand, that the planned project cannot be commercially self-sustaining despite the corresponding quality and, on the other hand, that the planned project has not previously been submitted in an unchanged form to the Hamburg Authority for Culture and Media for funding.
- Finally, the planned project must not have started before the application is submitted.
- Subsequent funding for a project that has already been produced is excluded.
