You can usually pick up your identity card in person or through an authorized representative five days after receiving the PIN letter with your personal identification number (PIN). Collection can only take place at the customer center where the application was made. In addition to a transport PIN, the PIN letter contains an unlocking number (PUK) and a blocking password.
The PIN letter will be sent directly to your registered address. If you do not have a registered address in Germany, the PIN letter can also be sent to the responsible identity card authority. If you have indicated that the PIN letter should be sent to the responsible ID card authority, you will receive the PIN letter on the day you pick up the new ID card.
If you have not received a PIN letter, you can usually pick up your identity card about 4 weeks after submitting your application. In this case, collection is only possible in person and not with a power of attorney.
If a person is commissioned to collect them, they must identify themselves and present a written authorization for collection with the following statement: "Receive PIN letter from Bundesdruckerei". You can find a sample collection authorization as a link under the additional information.
You only need the power of attorney to collect your child's identity card if the child is 16 years of age or older.

Procedure

You can pick up your new ID card from the relevant customer center:
  • Before the identity card can be picked up in person, Bundesdruckerei sends a cover letter (PIN letter) with a so-called transport PIN and a blocking password to the home address of the applicant. In exceptional cases, the PIN letter can be sent to the customer center.
  • As a rule, the identity card can be picked up 5 days after receipt of the PIN letter. If the applicant does not receive a PIN letter, the identity card can be approx. 4 weeks after applying for the identity card.
  • To collect your ID card, go to the customer center where you applied for your ID card.
Please check in advance whether your ID document is ready to be picked up (see link "Querying the processing status of your ID card or passport").
  • Please book an appointment for this.
  • You will be given a new ID card when you present your old ID card. If you want to keep the old ID card as a souvenir, the document can be returned to you after it has been validated.
  • If you have lost your old ID card in the meantime, fill out a notification of loss.
  • You explain to the clerk whether you have received the PIN letter and confirm this with a signature.
  • If the PIN letter has been sent to the customer center, it will be handed to you and you confirm receipt with your signature.
  • You have the option of assigning a six-digit PIN of your choice and thus making the online ID function (online ID) immediately ready for use. You can also set the six-digit PIN yourself at any time with a suitable NFC-enabled smartphone as well as the PIN letter and the AusweisApp2.
  • If you have not received the PIN letter and it has not been sent to the customer center either, you must enter a six-digit PIN of your choice if you want to receive the ID card and you will be notified of the blocking password immediately. Otherwise, a complaint order free of charge will be initiated.
  • Finally, confirm receipt of the new ID card with your signature.
An authorized person can be commissioned to collect the goods. They must identify themselves and present a written authorization for collection with the following statement: "Receive PIN letter from Bundesdruckerei".
