Prerequisites

• Your new ID card is ready for collection.

Documents required

• Your old identity card (exception: your old identity card is no longer available due to loss or theft)

In case of representation, additionally:

• Identification document of the person collecting the identity card for you
• Power of attorney (Example: "I hereby authorize Ms./Mr. XY to collect my identity card and to submit the declaration confirming receipt of the PIN letter." There are no binding requirements regarding the format of the power of attorney. You can find a template in the links. If you are collecting the identity card for your child under 16 years of age as a parent with custody, you do not need a power of attorney.)

Deadlines

• After the Federal Printing Office has provided your identity card, please collect it from the office where you submitted the application.
  
  
  You will receive a written reminder before the six-month period has expired.


• If you do not collect your identity card within six months, it will be destroyed after it expires.
  
  
  Please check with the relevant authority in advance whether your identity card, which you have kept for a long time, is still available.

Procedure

• After you have applied for a new identity card, it will be produced by the Federal Printing Office.
• You can check online whether your identity card is ready for collection.
• When your identity card is ready for collection, arrange an appointment to collect it at the office where you applied for the identity card.
• You must appear in person at the agreed appointment. Alternatively, you can authorize another person to collect your identity card.
• You must hand in your old identity card or have it invalidated. This is not necessary if you no longer have your old identity card due to loss or theft.
• Your new identity card will be issued to you.
• You will receive a cover letter for the issue, which also contains your blocking password.
• When you pick up your new identity card, you can choose a six-digit PIN yourself to activate the online identification function of your identity card.
  • Alternatively, you can do this at home. You will need an NFC-enabled smartphone, the PIN letter, and the ID card app. Your smartphone is usually NFC-enabled if it can communicate wirelessly with other devices, for example, for contactless payments.
• They confirm receipt of the identity card.
