Death abroad: Apply for certification in the German death register

Has someone died abroad or on a foreign vessel? Find out how you can have the death registered in Germany here.

Detailed description

Death certificates duly issued abroad are generally recognized in Germany. Deaths that occurred abroad do not need to be certified in Germany.

Subsequent registration in the German death register is useful if you require a German death certificate. You don't need any translations or certifications of the German death certificate, for example, for German insurance companies, health insurance providers, the probate court, or the tax office.

You can apply for the registration of a German person who died abroad or on a foreign vessel in the German death register. This is also possible for Germans who died abroad but were not resident in Germany.
