Apply for re-registration of a deregistered vehicle

If you want to drive a deregistered vehicle again, you must apply for re-registration.

Detailed description

If you want to use a deregistered vehicle on the road again, you must apply for re-registration of the vehicle.

Information

Prerequisites

  • Her main residence is in Hamburg.
  • For companies: Your place of business or the location of the company’s or trader’s branch is in Hamburg.
  • Your vehicle has been deregistered and now needs to be re-registered.

Documents required

  • valid identity card, electronic residence permit (eAT) or passport with current registration certificate
  • Electronic insurance confirmation as an eVB code (available from your car insurance company)
  • Registration certificate Part I (vehicle registration document) with note about the deregistration
  • Vehicle registration certificate part II (vehicle title)
  • Valid inspection certificate of the last main inspection (TÜV), if this was already required for the first time, and, if applicable, proof of the safety inspection and emissions test carried out.
  • Original SEPA direct debit mandate for the collection of vehicle tax (form available under Services and Links). If the tax is to be paid not by the vehicle owner but by a third party, a copy of the third party's identification document is required.
  • Appointment confirmation

Additionally, if your vehicle has been recovered after a theft:

  • Confirmation from the police that the vehicle is no longer listed as stolen property

Additionally, if another person is submitting the application on your behalf:

  • Original power of attorney
  • Copy of the principal's identity card
  • Original identity card of the authorized representative

Additionally for companies or associations:

  • Company or association proof (for example, extract from the commercial register or extract from the register of associations)

Please note

The existing license plate number can only be reused if it was reserved for this purpose when the vehicle was deregistered. If the license plate number was not reserved during deregistration, or if the vehicle is being re-registered to a different owner, a new license plate number must be applied for.

If the registered keeper and the owner of the vehicle are not the same person, the LBV (State Office for Roads and Transportation) must be notified of the person in whose name the vehicle is to be registered. This applies, for example, to leased vehicles.

If a general inspection, emissions test or safety inspection was due during the period between the deregistration and the reregistration of the vehicle, this must be carried out before the vehicle is re-registered.

If the details of the last registered owner have changed in the meantime, they will also be updated upon re-registration. This is the case, for example, if you have moved or if you have purchased a deregistered used vehicle.

If the last vehicle and owner data in the Central Vehicle Register have already been deleted (7 years after deregistration) and the data can no longer be verified otherwise, an expert opinion from an officially recognized expert is required.

Journeys related to the vehicle registration process may also be undertaken with assigned, unsealed license plates, provided the insurance covers this. Such journeys include trips to the vehicle inspection (MOT/TÜV) and to the registration office. These journeys are limited to the registration district and adjacent registration districts.

Re-registration must take place immediately if the vehicle is to be used again.
