In the area of the port of Hamburg, gun salutes are generally used to warn about 6 hours before a storm surge occurs.
Warnings of storm surges up to 4.50 m above sea level are issued by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH, Tel. 040-3190 3190).
Warnings for storm surges over 4.50 m above sea level are updated and distributed every half hour by the Hamburg Storm Surge Warning Service (WADI) of the Hamburg Port Authority.
