In all newly registered commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of more than 3.5 tonnes and buses with more than nine seats, digital tachograph devices are mandatory as a replacement for the manual tachograph. The tachograph device is necessary for recording, saving, displaying, printing and outputting activity-related data of the driver. Specially trained technicians in recognized workshops require workshop cards to work on these devices.

Important notes

Prerequisites

The workshop card must be applied for at the Landesbetrieb Verkehr (LBV), provided the workshop is based in Hamburg.
You also have the option of sending the application with the documents listed below by email to our driver's license mailbox (fuehrerschein@lbv.hamburg.de).

Documents required

an identity card or passport with the technician’s current registration certificate
a training certificate of the technician according to guideline number 3 to § 57b StVZO
proof of the workshop's approval according to § 57b StVZO
the technician’s employment contract (when renewing the card, a confirmation from the employer about the existing employment relationship is sufficient)
the appointment confirmation, in the case of a personal visit

Please note

Validity period
The workshop card is valid for one year. The extension may be made no earlier than 31 days before the deadline.

Application by email
You can also send the application for the workshop card by email to fuehrerschein@lbv.hamburg.de. It is important that all necessary documents are included in the attachment to the mail. You can find the application under Forms, Services and Links (see below). An appointment booking is required for a personal application. The driving license offices LBV-Mitte and LBV-Nord are responsible

Appointment booking
Appointments are booked via the LBV. Proceed as follows here:
1. Visit the website for booking appointments (see link below) and select the workshop card service under the Other service group.
2. Use the location selection to display appointments at a specific location.
3. After selecting the location, use the calendar displayed to select a free appointment (date and time).
4. Now enter your name and your e-mail address for booking.
5. You will receive an email. Please confirm the appointment.

Please bring the appointment confirmation that you will receive with you to the appointment.
