Replacing a driver's license after theft or loss

Prerequisites

• Her main residence is in Hamburg.

Documents required

• a valid identity card or an electronic residence permit (eAT) or passport with current registration confirmation
• a biometric passport photo 35 x 45 millimeters - not older than 1 year
• A copy of the driving licence card, if the licence was not issued in Hamburg and is still in the old paper format(the applicant can request the copy himself or commission the LBV to do so, which may delay the process).

Additionally, in case of theft: file a police report(for foreign reports, a translation by a sworn translator is necessary)

Please note

• Continuing to drive after loss or theft: After your appointment at the LBV, you may continue driving despite a lost or stolen driver's license. You can obtain a temporary paper document at your appointment at the LBV for possible police checks. Alternatively, you can also present your driver's license to the police afterward.
• Loss or theft of other vehicle documents: If you have lost other vehicle documents, please book another appointment at the registration office.
• Finding your driver's license: If you find your lost driver's license, you must hand it in to the LBV (Local Authority for Transport), as you are not allowed to have two driver's licenses at once. You can hand it in at any time at the information desk or send it by registered mail to the LBV.
• Validity of driving licenses: Driving licenses issued after January 19, 2013, are valid for fifteen years. After expiration, a new one must be issued. Driving licenses issued before January 19, 2013, must be exchanged by January 19, 2033.

You must apply for replacement documents as soon as possible.

Procedure

• You book an appointment online.
  • On our website for booking appointments, select the category "Driving license"
  • Book the appointment "Application for a replacement driver's license after loss, damage or theft"
  • You will receive an email. Confirm your reserved appointment via the link in the email.
• Please bring all required documents and your appointment confirmation to your appointment at the LBV. You must appear in person for the appointment.
• Scan the QR code from your appointment confirmation using the scanner on site.
• Please take a seat in the waiting area. You will be called by your number.
• Your request will be processed on site.
• The new driving licence will be delivered by registered mail by the LBV to your registered address.

Processing time

You will receive your new driver's license from the Federal Printing Office within 3-4 weeks by registered mail directly to your home.


You also have the option of requesting an express order. Production takes a maximum of 3 business days. In this case, the driver's license must be picked up at the LBV (State Office for Road Traffic).

Fees

The fees range between EUR 48.00 and EUR 79.00.


An additional fee of EUR 26.40 applies for express orders. The exact fees can only be determined after submission of all required documents.
