Extension of the driving license to include another driving license class

Holders of a driving licence can extend it by another driving licence (class) upon request

Use Online-Service

Detailed description

The application for an extension must be submitted to the LBV. The same documents are required for this (see important information) as for the first-time acquisition of the driver's license. If proof of participation in first aid training has already been submitted, no new proof is required.

As a rule, the required documents can be handed in to the driving instructor, who then takes care of applying for a driving license at the driving license authority.

Information

Prerequisites

The application can be submitted at the earliest six months before reaching the minimum age. The main residence of the applicant must be in Hamburg. The application can be made before the lessons at the driving school are completed. However, the new driver's license will only be issued after the lessons have been completed and the exams have been passed.

Documents required

The following documents are required for the application:

  • a valid identity card or an electronic residence permit (eAT) or passport with current registration confirmation
  • the already existing driver's license
  • a biometric passport photo 35 x 45 millimeters (without head covering) – not older than 1 year
  • a certificate of participation in a first aid training course (there are various providers, the LBV is not allowed to recommend any providers for reasons of competition law.)
  • an eye test (for classes A and B; e.g. by an optician)
  • the appointment confirmation

Additionally for the extension classes C and D:

  • an ophthalmological report in accordance with Annex 6 of the German Driving Licence Regulations (FeV), not older than two years
  • a medical certificate in accordance with Annex 5.1 of the German Driving License Regulations (FeV), not older than one year
  • a medical certificate in accordance with Annex 5.2 of the German Driving Licence Regulations (FeV), not older than one year (only class D)
  • A certificate of good conduct (only class D), which must be applied for at the relevant residents' registration office and is not older than three months.

Please note

The LBV-Mitte and LBV-Nord driving license offices are responsible for applying for driving licenses.

Driver's licenses issued after January 19, 2013, are valid for a period of fifteen years. After expiration, a new license must be issued. This only affects the driver's license itself; the driving permit remains valid, except for registered expiration dates for C/D classes. Driver's licenses issued before January 19, 2013, must be exchanged by January 19, 2033 at the latest.

Procedure

  • Once you've chosen a driving school and registered, you can usually submit all the necessary documents for your driver's license application there. Your driving school will then take care of everything necessary and inform you about the next steps.
  • If you only want to have key numbers entered into your driving licence, please book an appointment at the LBV:
    • On our website for booking appointments, select the category "Driver's License"
    • Book the appointment "Change of driving license data"
    • You will receive an email. Confirm your reserved appointment using the link in the email.
    • Your request will be dealt with on-site at your appointment at the LBV.

Processing time

The production of the new driver's license takes approximately 3-4 weeks.

Fees

The fees for extending your driver's license range between EUR 41.80 and EUR 70.40. The exact amount of the fee can only be determined on site based on the presentation of the complete documents. The basis for this is the fee schedule for measures in road traffic (GebOSt).
