Apply for an exemption from the obligation to wear a seat belt and a helmet

If you are not allowed to wear a seat belt or helmet for health reasons, you can apply for an exemption.

Detailed description

You must wear a seat belt while driving and a helmet when riding a motorcycle. This requirement may be waived if you are unable to wear a seat belt or helmet for health reasons. You may also be exempt from the seat belt requirement if you are less than 150 cm tall. You can apply for an exemption for this.

 

Information

Prerequisites

You have a medical certificate confirming that wearing a seat belt or helmet is not possible for health reasons.


Only applies to exemption from the obligation to wear a seat belt: you are shorter than 150 cm.

Documents required

  • informal signed application with reasons
  • valid identity card, electronic residence permit (eAT) or passport with current registration confirmation
  • medical certificate stating that the applicant cannot wear a seat belt or helmet due to his or her health condition

Please note

The exemption may be revoked by the authorities if the health conditions change or other means of transport can be used.

Deadlines

The exemption is granted for 1 year.




An exemption without a time limit is possible if the doctor confirms in writing that your health condition will not improve permanently.

Procedure

  • You submit all required documents to the LBV by post or in person.
  • Your documents will be reviewed.
  • You will be informed of the decision in writing.

Processing time

The processing time depends on the individual case.

Fees

The fee for the exemption is EUR 17.30.
