While setting up the online ID function on a smartphone and creating a service or federal ID account is possible from home, for many citizens the digital guides are an important support in taking the first steps to using the digital administrative services.
To use the online ID function, you need a valid identity card, an eID card for EU citizens, or an electronic residence permit with activated online functionality. Our digital guides will assist you with the next steps: downloading the ID card app to your device and setting up your PIN.
The AusweisApp is a free app that you can install on your smartphone or PC. It turns your NFC-enabled smartphone into a card reader that can electronically read your ID card and thus connect it to the online service you want to use. The AusweisApp can also be used on a PC in conjunction with an external card reader (e.g., your smartphone).
As a second security factor in addition to your ID card, there is a PIN that you must enter when reading your ID card in the ID card app. You may still have the PIN letter that came with your ID card and can use it to set up your PIN for the online ID function. The digital guides are happy to assist you with this. Similarly, if you no longer have your PIN letter, the digital guides, together with the staff at the locations, will help you assign a new PIN for your ID card.
The digital guides will work with you to verify these three requirements: ID card, ID card app, and PIN – and will also advise you on the nationwide BundID user account and the City of Hamburg's service account, setting them up with you. The digital guides are also available to answer any questions you may have about other digital administrative services.
