Apply for social assistance or elderly care

Prerequisites

• They have reached retirement age.
• They suffer from age-related difficulties and ailments.
• They cannot finance the assistance themselves, meaning there is a need (among other things, income limit according to § 85 Social Code (SGB) Book Twelve (XII), no assets to be used according to § 90 Social Code (SGB) Book Twelve (XII).

Documents required

• The documents you need to submit depend on your personal situation.
• Documents justifying the need, such as a medical certificate, if applicable a notification from the long-term care insurance fund and an expert opinion from the Medical Service of the Health Insurance Funds.
• Proof of economic need (social assistance application)
• The relevant authority will be happy to advise you.

Please note

Since these social assistance benefits can only be granted from the point in time when the basic income support and social welfare office learns of the applicant's need for assistance, the need for assistance should be reported as soon as possible.

This assistance begins as soon as the responsible authority or an agency commissioned by it becomes aware that the conditions for the benefit are met.

• The need for assistance can be reported informally to the responsible authority.
• A fully completed social assistance application (available upon request) should then be submitted promptly.
• The responsible authority then initiates the determination of the necessary need for assistance.
• Provided that the requirements are met and the income and asset situation does not preclude the granting of assistance, an approval notice will be issued.
• Since these social assistance benefits can only be granted from the point in time when the basic income support and social welfare office learns of the applicant's need for assistance, the need for assistance should be reported as soon as possible.
• After the application has been reviewed and, if necessary, further statements have been obtained, you will receive a notification.

Processing time

The processing time depends, among other things, on whether all information is complete and all necessary documents have been submitted.
