Prerequisites
A person has died and
- They are an institution such as a hospital, nursing home, hospice or other or
- They are an officially investigating authority (for example, the State Criminal Police Office, the police).
Documents required
In your written notification, provide all the information necessary for registering the death. Submit all required supporting documents.

- Marriage certificate and proof of dissolution of the marriage (legally valid divorce decree, death certificate)
- In the case of deceased persons residing outside Hamburg, if the registry office does not have access to the registration data:
- Extended registration certificate with current marital status from the residents' registration office

- Copy of will, powers of attorney or appointment within the framework of a guardianship
Please note
- If, as an institution, you intentionally or negligently fail to report a death, or report it incorrectly, incompletely, not in the prescribed manner, or not in a timely manner, you are acting unlawfully.
- Funeral homes usually take care of obtaining and submitting all the documents required for registering the death to the registry office on behalf of the relatives of the deceased.
Deadlines
As an institution, you must report the death within 3 working days.
