Fines in private long-term care insurance: General information

If you fail to comply with your obligation to take out private long-term care insurance or are 6 months in arrears with your premiums,

Detailed description

Every person living in Germany must have long-term care insurance. If you have private health insurance, you must also take out private long-term care insurance. If this necessary insurance coverage is lacking, the responsible authority can impose a fine on you.

Prerequisites

A fine will be imposed if you do not have long-term care insurance, your insurance coverage is interrupted due to late premium payments, or you fail to submit requested documentation in a timely manner.


Documents required

  • Insurance certificate or confirmation of insurance from your private long-term care insurance, documenting the conclusion of a long-term care insurance policy
  • Bank statements or transfer slips for documenting outstanding contribution payments

Deadlines

The payment deadline may vary depending on the individual case. It is usually two weeks.

Procedure

  • The responsible authority determines that you do not have long-term care insurance, have not paid contributions for 6 months, or that you are missing proof of insurance.
  • You will receive a letter requesting proof of existing long-term care insurance or payment of outstanding contributions, or proof of insurance coverage.
  • If you do not respond to the request from the responsible authority, if the outstanding contributions are still outstanding, or if you are indeed without insurance coverage, the responsible authority can issue a penalty notice against you. This notice will specify the amount of the fine, the reason for the penalty, and the payment deadline.

Processing time

The processing time can vary depending on the responsible authority and the circumstances of the individual case. Generally, it takes several weeks for a fine proceeding to be completed.
