If you are staying in Germany for a visa-free short stay of up to 90 days, you can apply for an extension of your stay under certain conditions.

 

Information

Prerequisites

  • You are currently in Germany for a visa-free short stay.
  • They wish to stay in Germany for a maximum of another 90 days.
  • They do not engage in any gainful employment or work in Germany during this time.

Documents required

  • Valid passport or passport substitute
  • Proof of previous short stay (for example, entry stamp, stay in the Schengen Area)
  • Proof that you were entitled to enter visa-free (for example, nationality of a state listed in Annex II of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806)
  • Declaration that you are not employed
  • Proof of sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay
  • Adequate health insurance coverage (for example, travel health insurance)

The countries from which you may enter Germany for a short period (maximum 90 days) without a visa can be found in Annex II of EU Regulation No. 2018/1806 (link).

Deadlines

Apply for the extension as early as possible, before your visa-free short stay expires, but at least 90 days after entering the Schengen Area.


The extension is possible for a maximum of 90 days after the short stay.

Procedure

  • You apply for the extension of your visa-free short stay with the required documents at the responsible authority.
  • The responsible authority will review your application and documents. If necessary, they will request further documents or information from you.
  • The relevant authority will decide on your application.
  • You will receive a residence permit.
  • They pay the fees.

Processing time

Processing usually takes 2 to 4 weeks.

Fees of €100.00 for adults and €50.00 for children apply.
