Do you want to apply for or renew an EU Blue Card? Find out more here.

Detailed description

The EU Blue Card is a temporary residence permit for highly qualified professionals from third countries. It allows them to pursue qualified employment that corresponds to their acquired qualifications.

The card is usually issued for up to 4 years. If the employment contract is for a shorter period, it is issued for the duration of the contract plus 3 months.

The extension of the EU Blue Card is possible if employment continues and the requirements are still met.

After 27 months of employment and pension contributions, a permanent residence permit can be applied for – with German language skills at level B1, this can be done after just 21 months.

If you wish to change jobs within the first 12 months of your employment, you do not need permission, but you must notify the immigration office. The immigration office can suspend the change for 30 days and reject it if the requirements for obtaining an EU Blue Card are no longer met.
