If you want to move from abroad to Germany to join a close family member (usually a spouse, life partner, or children), this is called family reunification. Family reunification allows you to live together with your family member in Germany. To do so, you must apply for a residence permit for family reasons.
The residence permit for family reasons is granted for a limited period. You can apply for an extension.
Which office in Hamburg is responsible for your application depends on your case:
If the person you wish to live with in Germany has received a residence permit from the Hamburg Welcome Center for Professionals (HWCP), this office is usually also responsible for your application for the granting or extension of a residence permit for family reasons.
In other cases, especially if you want to move to a family member with German citizenship, the local Hamburg Service is generally responsible.
