Apply for a firearms license for security companies and security personnel

Detailed description

If you wish to carry a firearm requiring a permit for security purposes (e.g. personal or property protection or transport of money and valuables), you will need a firearms license and a firearms ownership card.



If you are deployed with a weapon as part of your security work on the instructions of your employer, you do not need a firearms license. In this case, you only need a firearms license for the security industry, which will be issued to the responsible person in your company.

 

Information

Prerequisites

  • You are at least 18 years old.
  • You have the necessary reliability, personal suitability and expertise
  • You can provide reasons that justify owning and carrying a weapon.

Documents required

  • Identity card or passport as a copy or photo
  • Official proof of expertise or proof from an officially approved commercial training provider.
    • The certificate of professional competence must comply with current legal requirements. This is usually the case for professional competence examinations taken after April 1, 2003.
  • Proof of need: security orders or offers that explicitly state the type and scope of the security activity as well as the persons, objects or valuables to be protected.
  • Proof of liability insurance in the amount of EUR 1,000,000 for personal injury and property damage
  • Proof of safe storage of firearms and ammunition
  • Information on the weapons to be entered in the firearms license (if already known)
  • For persons under 25 years of age: official or specialist medical or psychological report on personal suitability

For applicants employed in the security industry, additionally:

  • Certificate from the employer
    • about a current employment relationship and employment in a job that requires carrying a weapon. The certificate must include information about the scope (full-time or part-time) and whether the employment relationship is temporary or permanent. Irrelevant information may be redacted.
    • specifying the type of security activity to be carried out (cash transport, valuables transport, property protection, personal protection
    • with information about which weapon(s) will be carried (if already known)

The permit to carry a weapon is limited to a maximum of 3 years and can be extended twice for up to 3 years.

Procedure

  • You submit your application in writing or electronically to the responsible authority.
  • The responsible authority checks the documents.
  • If the test is positive, the responsible authority will issue the firearms license for the security industry.
