Detailed description

The Hamburger Bücherhallen is the public library system of the city of Hamburg. They offer access to a wide range of media and information, including books, magazines, newspapers, DVDs, audio books, e-books and much more.



Children and young people can receive a free customer card from the Hamburg Public Library if they receive benefits to secure their livelihood, such as basic social security, citizen's allowance, housing benefit or child allowance. The card is valid for one year and allows free use of the public library.

You or your child is under 18 years old.


You or your child receive social benefits within the framework of measures for education and participation such as

  • basic security
  • citizen's allowance
  • social security benefit
  • housing benefit
  • child allowance
  • basic benefits or social benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act

Documents required

  • proof of receipt of social benefits
  • Form: Declaration of consent of the legal guardian (see links: Permission form)
