With the online ID function and the ID app, you can securely identify yourself on the internet and use digital government services (online services).
The online identification function (eID function) is included in the national identity card, the electronic residence permit, and the electronic identity card (eID card) for EU citizens. This allows you to uniquely identify yourself online, thus proving your identity. It works with a PIN (similar to a bank card) and must be activated in order to use it.
The ID card app is free software that you can install on your PC, smartphone, or tablet. It connects your ID card to the online service you want to log into. It acts as an interface between your ID card, card reader, or smartphone and the online service or portal. With it, you can:
- Register securely online with your ID card,
- Check your ID details or
- Start online services (for example, digitally sign or submit applications).
The digital guides at Hamburg Service are available on-site to help you activate the PIN for the eID function or install and set up the ID card app. They can also advise you on the nationwide user account (BundID) and the City of Hamburg's service account and set them up with you.
