Detailed description

With a changeable license plate you can use two vehicles under the same license plate.

The allocation of changeable license plates is only possible for

  • two vehicles of the same vehicle class, e.g. class M1,
  • two two-wheeled or three-wheeled motor vehicles and light quadricycles,
  • two trailers with a maximum permissible mass of up to 0.75 tonnes

The license plates consist of two parts: a replaceable common license plate part and a vehicle-specific license plate part. Together, the two parts form the complete license plate. The vehicle-specific part bears an identification number, so that each vehicle has its own specific license plate and can be clearly identified. A W is embossed on the common license plate part above the space for the stamping plate. The MOT stickers are affixed to the rear vehicle-specific license plate parts.

Prerequisites

These are two vehicles of the same vehicle class: either two passenger cars (vehicle class M1), two two- or three-wheeled vehicles (vehicle class L), or two trailers up to a maximum of 750 kg (vehicle class O1).

Documents required

The application documents depend on the type of registration of your vehicles. Please refer to the respective entries for information.

Please note

  • Both vehicles must be taxed and are subject to compulsory insurance.
  • Only one of the two vehicles may be used on public roads at a time.
  • The second vehicle may not be parked in public traffic during this time.
  • The common license plate part must always be attached to the vehicle that participates in public road traffic. The vehicle-specific parts always remain on both vehicles.

Procedure

  • Book an appointment online.
    • Book the appointment that best fits your needs on our website. This appointment must be arranged during the registration process. There is no specific appointment type for this license plate number.
    • Please also note the possibility of a personalized license plate.
    • You will receive an email. Confirm your reservation using the link in the email.
  • Bring all necessary documents and the appointment confirmation with you to your appointment at the LBV.
  • Scan the QR code on your appointment confirmation using the scanner on site.
  • Take a seat in the waiting area. You will be called by your call number.
  • Your request is being processed.
  • Documents and signs will be given to you.
  • Your vehicle is registered.
  • Additionally, you can use our special drop-off service in the admissions department. Here, you have the option of submitting your application to the LBV. Once the documents are complete, you can pick up your application by appointment, at the earliest on the following business day.

Processing time

Your application will be processed directly on site.


You can collect the temporary license plates no later than the following working day.

Fees

In addition to the registration fees for both vehicles (which vary depending on the type of registration), a fee for interchangeable license plates of EUR 6.00 per vehicle will be charged.


If you wish to use a personalized license plate, you will be charged twice the personalized license plate fee of currently EUR 10.20. The fee is based on the fee schedule for measures in road traffic (GebOSt).

Appointments only, Mon, Wed 7 a.m. - 2 p.m., Tue, Thu 7 a.m. - 6 p.m., Fri 7 a.m. - 12 p.m.

There is a photo booth (speed capture terminal).


QR codes from appointment confirmations can be scanned provided the display of your mobile device is not cracked or otherwise damaged.
