Red license plates can be issued for classic cars. This allows unregistered classic cars to take part in events that serve to present and preserve the cultural heritage of motor vehicles.

Detailed description

Red license plates can be allocated to vintage cars for the following purposes:

  • for events that serve to present vintage vehicles and the "care of motor vehicle cultural assets",
  • for test, trial and transfer journeys
  • for trips to repair or maintain the classic car

For transport trips abroad, you should always find out about the regulations in the respective country beforehand. If in doubt, an export license plate is recommended for the transport.

 

Information

Prerequisites

  • Her registered main residence is in Hamburg.
  • The vehicle must be at least 30 years old and be recognized as a classic car by a report.

  • The person responsible must appear in person to receive instruction on how to use the red license plates.

Documents required

  • Identity card or passport
  • Commercial register extract for companies
  • electronic insurance confirmation -eVB Code- for red license plates (available from the car insurance company),
  • current test certificate of the main inspection (TÜV)
  • Certificate of good conduct (feature O to be applied for at the registration authority for official purposes)
  • Information from the driving aptitude register (points balance) at the Federal Motor Transport Authority (not older than 3 months)
  • Vehicle documents (domestic or foreign registration documents)
  • Appointment confirmation

If you want to register multiple vehicles with a red license plate, you will also need proof of ownership and, if applicable, the foreign vehicle registration documents. If you have any questions, please contact rotekennzeichen@lbv.hamburg.de before your appointment.

There are no deadlines.

Procedure

  • Book an appointment online.
    • On our website, select the category "Vehicle Registration"
    • Then book "Application for red license plates for classic cars"
    • You will receive an email. Confirm your reservation using the link in the email.
  • Bring all necessary documents and the appointment confirmation with you to your appointment at the LBV.
  • Scan the QR code on your appointment confirmation using the scanner on site.
  • Take a seat in the waiting area. You will be called by your call number.
  • Your request is being processed.
  • Documents and signs will be given to you.
  • Your vehicle is registered.

Processing time

Your request will be processed immediately.

Fees

The fees range from EUR 120.00 to EUR 150.00.


The exact amount of the fee can only be determined on-site based on the submission of the complete documents.
