Apply for an extension of recognition as an assistance dog

The recognition of your dog as an assistance dog is limited. You can apply for an extension.

Detailed description

Recognition of a dog as an assistance dog is always granted for a limited period and remains valid until the assistance dog has reached the age of ten. You can apply to the responsible authority for an extension of the recognition. Upon your application, the recognition can be extended twice for up to twelve months each time.

 

Information

Prerequisites

  • Your dog is recognized as an assistance dog. The validity period of the recognition will expire shortly.
  • You have a disability that prevents you from participating equally in society.
  • As a trained assistance dog, the dog enables you to participate in social life and compensates for disadvantages caused by your disability.
  • The dog is suitable as an assistance dog
    • good physical and mental health, without chronic pain and suffering that are difficult to treat or control, and without behavioural disorders.
  • The dog is healthy.
  • The dog has a registered microchip transponder.
  • The dog is registered with a pet register.
  • You have liability insurance that covers damage caused by the dog. The insured amount is at least 1 million euros, the deductible is a maximum of 500 euros.

Documents required

  • A veterinary certificate confirming the health suitability of the assistance dog.
    • The certificate must not be older than three months at the time of application.
  • Proof that the dog is suitable as an assistance dog in your specific case (specific individual suitability), for example by a certificate from the social benefits provider or a specialist doctor
  • Your severely disabled person’s ID card or notice of determination of a degree of disability
  • Assistance dog ID card

Six months before the expiry of the recognition

Procedure

  • You apply for an extension of the recognition to the responsible authority and submit the necessary documents.
  • The responsible authority will examine your application and, if necessary, request any missing documents or information from you.
  • If the test is positive, the responsible authority will change your assistance dog ID card.
