Reporting a move to Hamburg from abroad

If you move to Hamburg from abroad, you must register.

Detailed description

If you have moved to Hamburg from abroad, you must register in Hamburg.

Register with the relevant authority if you plan to stay in Hamburg for longer than 3 months.

Your address will be entered in the residents' register. If you are a German citizen, your official identification documents will be changed.

You will receive an official registration confirmation.

 

Information

Prerequisites

  • You moved to Hamburg from abroad.
  • You will be staying in Hamburg for more than 3 months.
  • You and all persons moving in with you must appear in person for an appointment at the responsible office.

Documents required

  • Your valid identification document (identity card, passport, passport substitute)
  • and, if applicable, additionally
    • Your eID card or
    • Your (electronic) residence permit
  • Confirmation of accommodation provider with the following information:
    • Name and address of the landlord and, if he is not the owner, also the name of the owner,
    • Move-in date,
    • Address of the apartment and
    • Names of all persons moving into the apartment
  • When moving into a home, you will also need a purchase agreement or land register extract
  • Your original civil status documents (e.g. birth certificate, marriage certificate, declaration of name)
  • and, if applicable, additionally
    • Proof of the authenticity of the document in the form of legalization or apostille
    • Translation by a sworn interpreter

Please note

There are no clues or special features.

Deadlines

Please register no later than 2 weeks after your move.

Procedure

  • You can make an appointment online or by calling 115.
  • You bring all necessary documents with you to the appointment and present them.
  • You register your place of residence.
  • Your address will be stored in the residents’ register.
  • If you are a German citizen, your address/place of residence will be changed in your official documents.
  • You will receive a registration confirmation.
  • You pay the fee.

Processing time

Processing on site usually takes 15 to 20 minutes.

Fees

There is a charge of EUR 13.00 per person or family unit with the same moving dates.

Rahlstedt Residents' Affairs

You can use this service at any Hamburg Service location for residents' affairs, regardless of where you live in Hamburg.

Mon-Tue 12-7pm, Wed-Thu 7am-12pm, Fri 8am-2pm, Visits are by appointment only. You can book an appointment online (https://www.hamburg.de/go/17584) or by phone at 040 115.

If you would like to apply for an identity card, passport or children's passport, you can use an existing self-recording terminal (speed capture terminal) in the customer center to capture the necessary biometric data (digital photo, signature, fingerprints).
Please allow a few minutes more time before your appointment to collect your data.
Note: You will not receive a printout of the digital photo.
There is no need to bring a passport photo with you when using the self-registration terminal.
Use costs 6 euros.
Please speak to the clerk afterwards.

The existing self-recording terminal (Speed Capture Terminal) cannot be used for fishing licenses and driver's license applications. Please bring a passport photo (biometric) with you for these services.
