Deferment from school attendance consent

Would you like your school-age child to be deferment from attending school? The application for deferment from attending school can be submitted either by the legal guardians via the first-choice school or by the first-choice school after hearing from the legal guardians.

Detailed description

Would you like your school-age child to be exempt from attending school? You can apply for this at the school under certain conditions.

Deferments of school-age children are permitted under Section 38, Paragraph 3

According to the Hamburg School Act (HmbSG), this is only possible for children who turn 6 between January 1 and June 30 of the year they start school.

Deferment shall only be considered if successful participation in class 1 appears impossible, taking into account the child's intellectual, psychological, physical or linguistic level of development, and if it is expected that the identified deficits can be made up by attending a preschool class for one year.

Prerequisites

Children of compulsory school age who turn 6 between January 1 and June 30 of the year they start school. The school or the authorities determine that the child cannot meet the requirements of the first year of primary school.

Children who are held back are placed in a preschool class.

Deferment after compulsory schooling has begun (legal start of a school year: August 1st of a year) is no longer possible.

Documents required

An application from the school or the legal guardians; if applicable, a school doctor's statement, and if necessary, other documents that the parents provide to support the application.

Applications for deferment must be submitted before compulsory school attendance begins, usually during the registration process in January.
