Would you like your child to change to a local school? You can apply to the school for this under certain conditions.

In the 4th grade, guardians receive a recommendation for the type of school. In Hamburg, this is the recommendation for the district school or for the grammar school. The school career recommendation is not binding. You can also enroll your child in a different type of school.

Before the end of the observation phase (at the end of grade 6), it is examined whether the student should continue to attend the chosen type of school or change school type, taking into account the student's level of performance, the support measures previously implemented by the school and the expected development.

Anyone who does not meet the grade requirements specified in Section 13 of the Training and Examination Regulations for Primary Schools and Grades 5 to 10 of District Schools and Gymnasiums (APO-GrundStGy) at the end of the 6th grade of the Gymnasium must leave the Gymnasium and move on to the 7th grade of the District School.

Deadlines

For the central procedures (transition to year 5 of the grammar school and the district school and change to year 7 of the district school), the deadlines are announced separately each year.




For all other grades, the deadline for changing to a new school year is May 31 of each year.

Procedure

  • A transfer to a district school must always be requested from the previous school.
  • The legal guardians submit the application to the school the child has previously attended.
  • There is a central registration procedure for enrolling in secondary school (year 5).
  • The dates are announced annually by the secondary schools.
