Suspension of compulsory schooling, e.g. due to childbirth, voluntary social or ecological year or military or civilian service

If you would like to apply for a suspension of compulsory schooling for your child, please contact the school your child attends.

Detailed description

Compulsory school attendance is suspended for a pupil for at least four months before and six months after giving birth, provided that the pupil requests this (Section 40 Paragraph 1 of the Hamburg School Act).

Compulsory schooling is suspended for the duration of military or civilian service or a voluntary social or ecological year. It can be suspended upon request for the duration of attendance at an educational institution or employment or in other justified individual cases (Section 40 Paragraph 2 of the Hamburg School Act).

An application must always be submitted in writing to the previous school with appropriate supporting documents.

  • Your child attends a school in Hamburg
  • One of the requirements of Section 40 of the Hamburg School Act is met

  • Indication of the desired period of suspension of compulsory schooling
  • Documents (medical proof of pregnancy; registration confirmations from relevant institutions)

Please submit your application in good time as soon as you have the relevant documents or certificates.

Deadlines

You should submit your application to the school as soon as possible after the relevant requirements have been met.

Procedure

You first request a consultation at the school you have previously attended.

If the conditions for a suspension of compulsory schooling are met, submit an informal written application including accompanying documents to the school.

The school management will review the application and initiate further steps.

You will receive a written notification.

The processing time depends on the individual case

Legal remedies

You can lodge an objection against a decision within one month. This has no suspensive effect.




However, if the objection procedure is wholly or partially unsuccessful, costs may arise.
