Promotion of the independent performing arts / performing arts / dance and theatre

With the project funding for independent performing arts, the Ministry of Culture and Media supports professional independent theatre producers and groups.

Support is provided for independent productions in the areas of spoken theatre, musical theatre and performance, dance, children’s and youth theatre.

Detailed description

The Department of Culture and Media of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg has set itself the goal of promoting professional independent performing arts in Hamburg. Freelance artists and groups should be given the opportunity to develop productions independently of a fixed venue, to realize multi-year concepts and to present them to the public. Funding for structural measures or artistic research can also be applied for. Productions for adult and young audiences in the areas of spoken theater, musical theater, performance and dance are supported. The projects should be developed for Hamburg and presented here.

An independent jury of experts decides on the allocation of funds and recommends selected projects for funding.

They can ensure proper management and are able to guarantee and prove that the funds are used for their intended purpose.

Documents required

In addition to the necessary general information (name and address of the applicant), the application must contain in particular the following information:

  • realistic financing plan that takes into account all expenses and income related to the purpose of the grant; this also includes any own and third-party funds that may be used (e.g. sponsorship funds)
  • Project description (short version and long version)
  • Schedule and event date(s) and location(s)
  • Venue certificate
  • Short CV of the main project participants

Please note

- The scope and amount of the grant depends on the recommendation of the expert jury. In principle, efforts to find private and/or public sources of funding are required.

- At the same time, the overall financing of the project to be funded must be guaranteed, i.e. the financing of the expenses not covered by the grant through third-party funds.

- A further prerequisite for any type of funding is, on the one hand, that the planned project cannot commercially support itself despite the corresponding quality and, on the other hand, that the planned project has not previously been submitted in an unchanged form to the Hamburg Authority for Culture and Media for funding.

- Finally, the planned project must not have started before the application is submitted.

Subsequent funding for a project that has already been produced is excluded.
