Apply for recognition as a nursing assistant with a foreign professional qualification

You have acquired a professional qualification as a nursing assistant abroad. Would you like to work in this profession in the federal state? You can have your foreign professional qualification officially recognized.

Detailed description

You can have a qualification as a geriatric nursing assistant from abroad officially recognized in Germany.
Please note: Your qualification must be officially recognized in the country in which you completed your training. Informal or non-formal qualifications cannot be officially recognized in Germany.
You apply for recognition at the responsible authority in the federal state in which you want to work. To do this, you must submit an application with all the necessary documents to the responsible state authority.
The responsible body then carries out an equivalence test. The responsible body compares your professional qualification from abroad with the professional qualification in the federal state. Important criteria in the comparison are the content and duration of the training.
You will receive a notification about the outcome of the procedure. The notification will state any professional qualifications you have and any that you may still be missing.

Prerequisites

  • Equivalence of your professional qualifications, proven by appropriate documents.
  • They want to work in the state.
  • You meet the personal requirements to practice the profession.
  • You have the required language skills.
  • You have personal reliability and are physically fit for the job.

  • Proof of identity (identity card or passport)
  • Proof of your professional qualifications (e.g. certificates, professional certificate)
  • Evidence of content and duration of training
  • Evidence of professional experience in the profession
  • Evidence of other relevant qualifications
  • Have you ever applied for recognition? Please indicate where you applied.
  • You do not yet live or work in the EU, EEA or Switzerland? Then you may have to prove that you want to work in the profession in the federal state. Evidence can include applications for a job, invitations to interviews or a location note from the Central Service Center for Professional Recognition (ZSBA).

If your documents are not in German, you must submit German translations of your documents. The translations must be made by translators who are officially appointed or authorized.

Procedure

You submit an application for recognition to the responsible authority. You must submit all the necessary documents in the form of copies to the responsible authority.

The responsible body then checks: Is your foreign professional qualification equivalent to the professional qualification in the federal state? The responsible body compares the qualifications using certain criteria. Important criteria are the content and duration of the training. When checking equivalence, the responsible body also takes into account your professional experience, your other certificates of competence and qualifications.

You will receive a notification with the result of the procedure. You will receive recognition if your professional qualification and the professional qualification in the federal state are equivalent.

Sometimes there are significant differences between professional qualifications. The differences are listed in your notice. This notice allows you to gain further qualifications in a targeted manner.

If your professional qualification is not equivalent, you will not receive recognition or your application will be rejected.

Processing time

The responsible authority will confirm receipt of your application within one month. The responsible authority will inform you if further documents are required. If you have submitted all the required documents, you will receive a notification with the result within 3 months at the latest. In certain cases, the responsible authority can extend the procedure:

Legal remedies

You can take legal action against the decision of the responsible authority within a certain period of time (for example, lodge an objection). The decision will then be reviewed. Details can be found in the legal remedy instructions at the end of your decision. You should first speak to the responsible authority before taking legal action against the decision.
