Detailed description

For preschool children from six months of age, the youth music school offers parent-child groups, early musical education, choirs, dance and rhythm, music therapy and bridging courses as a transition to instrumental lessons.

Children aged 5-10 can learn many musical instruments with us and sing, dance and play in a band or orchestra together with other children.

For those aged 11-25, there are also subjects such as composition, Afghan music and world music. There are also many band, ensemble, orchestra and choir options for making music together. For particularly gifted children and young people, we have support options such as performance classes, remedial classes and preparatory courses for university studies.
We have three choir schools for children aged 4 and over. In the St. Michaelis Singing School, the Hamburg Girls' Choir or the New Hamburg Boys' Choir, your children can remain in a musical community for many years.

The musical theater offerings with singing, acting and dance begin from the age of 6 with the musical theater for children. The musical theater orientation level builds on this. After that, your children can decide whether they want to go to the Youth Opera Academy or the Musical Academy for Teens.

At the orchestra school, your children learn to play together with a string or wind instrument from a very early age. After a few years, they can then play in the YouMe! youth symphony orchestra, the Hamburg wind orchestra or the “Think Big!” big band. If you as a parent would like to play in the orchestra with your children, the “Elbphilharmonie Family Orchestra” in cooperation with the youth music school might be an option.

In the Jazz, Rock, Pop department there are many bands of different styles for your children.

The courses are inclusive and all children and young people can register.

Prerequisites

The Hamburg State Youth Music School offers lessons for all children and young people up to the age of 25. There are no special requirements for taking part in the course.

The State Youth Music School offers lessons close to where you live at over 150 school locations.

Deadlines

You can make a reservation for the courses on offer at any time. There are separate registrations for offers in the promotion of giftedness and in some cases there are also registration deadlines. You can find them on our website.

There are deadlines for terminating teaching contracts:

You have the option of deregistering yourself or your child on the following dates:

Individual, partner and group lessons: two months to the end of the school quarter (October 31st, January 31st, April 30th, July 31st)

Subject packages: two months to the end of the school year (07/31)

When registering for a subject for the first time, students can be de-registered within the first two billing months. The written deregistration must then be received by the fee administration no later than 8 working days before the end of the first or second billing month. The full monthly fee is to be paid in each case.

Pupils with a stay abroad of a maximum of three months do not have to deregister as long as they continue to pay the tuition fee.

A deregistration must be made in writing to the fee administration of the youth music school, Michael Otto Haus, Mittelweg 42, 20148 Hamburg, and be available by the specified dates.

In particularly justified cases, the State Youth Music School (JMS) can also cancel lessons at another date (e.g. if the fee is not paid within one month of receipt of the reminder despite a reminder; refusal to participate in the compulsory audition).

Interested parties can first be put on the reservation list for the desired lesson. This can be done by telephone, in person or by e-mail via the responsible city area. Interested parties can also use the online portal of the city of Hamburg to make a note:

If necessary, advice will be given by the Hamburg State Youth Music School. A teaching contract will then be concluded and, if necessary, an application for a reduction will be made.

At the same time, there is admission via the funding programs "Promotion of Musical Talent" and "Favorite Subject Music" as well as "Foundation Class" and "Preparatory Training".

Processing time

That depends on the course. We aim to provide feedback within a few days.

Fees

Fees are due for the music lessons themselves and, if applicable, the use of musical instruments, which differ depending on the course / instrument. On our website we provide information about the exact amount of the fees and the possibilities for discounts. We support low-income families, eg recipients of housing benefit or job center benefits. There are also support programs for particularly gifted students. Talk to us, we will be happy to advise you on the individual grants.
