Prerequisites
- You are at least 18 years old
- You have a reasonable reason (need) for carrying the weapon
- You have no criminal record (reliability)
- You are not legally incapable and do not have a mental illness or drug addiction (personal suitability)
- You have knowledge of firearms regulations and the safe handling of weapons and ammunition, as well as skills in shooting firearms and knowledge of carrying a weapon in public
- You have liability insurance that covers personal injury and property damage up to a flat rate of 1 million euros
- You may be denied a gun license if you have not lived in Germany within the last 5 years.
Documents required
- Identity card or passport (copy)
- Gun ownership card (unless you applied for it at the same time)
- Proof of a need (e.g. proof that you are at risk)
- Proof of liability insurance in the amount of 1 million euros (flat rate for personal injury and property damage)
- Certificate of special expertise
- Proof of storage (e.g. photo of the lockable container)
Please note
Exceptions apply to the transport of weapons that are not ready to fire and are not accessible on the way to the hunt or to the shooting range and back.
If you move, you do not need to re-register your firearms license.
If you only want to carry blank-firing, irritant or signal weapons with approval marks from the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in public, you only need the small firearms license, the issue of which is subject to less strict requirements.
To complete the application more quickly, you can use the NWR identification numbers (NWR-ID):
- Your PersonalNWR-ID (P- or F-NWR-ID) for your personal information
- the permit NWR-ID for the firearms permit (E-NWR-ID)
- the weapon or weapon part NWR ID (W or T NWR ID).
You will receive the NWR IDs upon application to the responsible weapons authority.
Deadlines
You will receive the gun license for a maximum of 3 years. You can extend the gun license twice for a maximum of 3 years.
