Apply for education package benefits

If you do not have enough money to pay for educational or leisure activities for your child, you may be able to receive support from the Education and Participation Package.

Detailed description

The Education and Participation Package supports children and young people from low-income families in participating equally in school and extracurricular activities.


You can receive support for:

  • Excursions and school trips as part of school, childcare or daycare
  • School supplies (e.g. pens, notebooks, calculators)
  • Learning support (if the school identifies a need)
  • shared lunch at school, daycare or childcare
  • six weeks of free holiday care per school year as part of the school's all-day care program
  • free Germany ticket from the Hamburg Transport Association (HVV)
  • Participation in club, cultural or leisure activities (e.g. sports club, music school, leisure activities)

Depending on the type of benefit and the social security benefit you receive, different agencies are responsible in Hamburg. The responsible agencies will provide you with detailed information about the respective benefit. Further information can be found in the "Links" section.

Prerequisites

  • You have a low income and the responsible authority has confirmed, after reviewing your income, that you are eligible for the benefit you have applied for from the education package. or
  • You already receive or are entitled to
    • Citizen's allowance (SGB II)
    • Social assistance or basic security in old age or due to incapacity for work (SGB XII)
    • Benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act (AsylbLG)
    • Housing benefit
    • Child supplement under the Federal Child Benefit Act (BKGG)

Depending on which specific benefit you would like to receive from the education package, additional requirements may apply. You can obtain information about these directly from the responsible departments, schools, or school authorities.

Please note

You will automatically receive the school supplies allowance for your children between the ages of 7 and 15 if you regularly receive citizen's allowance, social assistance, basic security, or benefits under the Asylum Seekers' Benefits Act. Payments are made in February and August each year, along with your other benefits.



If your child would like to participate in a socio-cultural participation program, such as a sports club or music school, you can have the provider handle the application and billing with the City of Hamburg directly.



If you have a low income but do not receive social benefits, the following authority is responsible for assessing your eligibility for benefits under the education package:


The responsible office is the Job Center team.arbeit.hamburg (if you are employable) or the social services office responsible for you in the district office (if you are not employable).

Procedure

  • If you submit your application to an authority that is not competent, your application will be forwarded to the competent authority.
  • The responsible authority will examine your application and request any necessary documents from you.
  • The responsible authority will decide on your application and inform you of the decision in writing.
