Prerequisites
- You are of the appropriate age to own the respective weapon
- They have an understandable need to own weapons
- They are reliable under firearms law
- You are personally suitable
- You are knowledgeable in handling weapons and ammunition
- You can store the weapons and ammunition safely
Documents required
- Identity card or passport (copy)
- Proof of storage, for example purchase contract for a gun safe and/or photos of the gun safe and its location
- For sports shooters who have not yet reached the age of 21 or persons who have not yet reached the age of 25, additionally: specialist medical or psychological certificate of your mental suitability
- only in the case of a community of heirs: if necessary, a declaration of waiver that the other members of the community of heirs do not wish to own the weapons
Please note
If you have inherited weapons or ammunition, you must report this to the relevant authorities immediately, regardless of whether you wish to continue to keep the weapons.
If you cannot prove that you need the inherited weapons, you must either render the weapons unusable or have them fitted with an advanced blocking system. Ammunition that requires a permit must also be rendered unusable or handed over to an authorized person. All modifications to the inherited weapons must be carried out by a specialist. You must report these changes to the relevant authority. If there is no suitable blocking system available on the market for one or more inherited weapons, exceptions to the blocking requirement can be applied for under certain conditions.
You could be considered unsafe under firearms law if you
- have been sentenced to a term of imprisonment of at least one year in the last 10 years,
- were a member of or supported a banned organisation, or
- if it can be assumed that you are misusing weapons or ammunition or handling them improperly.
You could be classified as personally unsuitable if you
- are legally incapable,
- are dependent on alcohol or other intoxicating substances,
- are mentally ill or mentally retarded,
- suffer from serious illnesses or physical impairments, or
- if it can be assumed that you cannot handle weapons or ammunition carefully or properly and that this poses a danger to yourself or others.
