Detailed description

The international driving license can be applied for at the LBV offices as well as at the special City location.

 

Information

Prerequisites

The application is only possible

  • if the applicant has his main residence in Hamburg at the time of applying for the driving license and
  • the driving license is in the new EU card format and was not issued before 01.01.1999.

If you still have one of the old grey or pink driving licenses, you must first exchange it for the new EU card driving license. You can find more information on this under the link "LBV driving license exchange" (see below).

Documents required

  • valid EU card driving licence
  • a valid identity card or passport and, if available, the electronic residence permit
  • Printed passport photo. Photos cannot be taken at Hamburg Service locations.

Please note that the processing time is currently approximately 4-6 weeks.

Please note

  • Period of validity
    The international driving license is valid for a maximum of three years. However, if a class C or D driving license is to be registered with a validity period of less than three years, the international driving license will also be shortened to the validity period of the registered classes C or D.
  • Application with power of attorney
    Applications with power of attorney can only be made directly to the LBV.
  • renewal
    The International Driving Permit cannot be extended.

Procedure

The application is made on site. The LBV will deliver the new driving license by registered mail to the registration address of the person applying.

  • The processing time is approximately 4-6 weeks.

Fees


  • Applying for an international driving license normally costs EUR 20.40; if you want to exchange it for an EU card driving license, additional costs apply.


    The basis for this is the fee schedule for measures in road traffic (GebOSt).

Mon-Fri 7am-7pm, visits are only possible by appointment. You can book an appointment online (https://www.hamburg.de/go/17584) or by phone at 040 115.

If you would like to apply for an identity card, passport or children's passport, you can use an existing self-recording terminal (Speed Capture Terminal) to capture the necessary biometric data (digital photo, signature, fingerprints).


Please allow a few minutes more time before your appointment to collect your data.


Note: You will not receive a printout of the digital photo.


There is no need to bring a passport photo with you when using the self-registration terminal.


Use costs 6 euros.


Please speak to the clerk afterwards.


Danger!


The existing self-recording terminal (Speed Capture Terminal) cannot be used for fishing licenses and driver's license applications. Please bring a passport photo (biometric) with you for these services.
