Driving license, replacement after theft or loss, customer center Hamburg-City (processing time: approx. 4 months)

If your driving license is lost or stolen, you can apply for a new document at the Hamburg-City customer center.
This service is only offered at the customer center in Hamburg-City.

Important notes

Prerequisites

In order to apply, you must have your main place of residence in Hamburg.
The application must be submitted in person.

Documents required

  • a valid identity card or passport and, if available, the electronic residence permit
  • a biometric passport photo 35 x 45 millimeters
  • a copy of an index card if the driver's license was not issued in Hamburg and is still in the old paper format (the applicant can apply for the copy himself or commission the LBV to do so, which can, however, delay the process).
Additionally in the event of theft: report to the police (for foreign reports, a translation by a sworn translator is required)
Technical information for HS: "An affidavit will be taken from the LBV when you pick up the new driver's license. This is done on site.
The fee of EUR 72.40 drops to EUR 46.50 if there is a criminal complaint, as there is no need to submit an affidavit.
Loss of a foreign driver's license. The caller should email the LBV with their request."

Please note

Loss or theft of other vehicle documents
If you have lost other vehicle documents, please book another appointment with the registration (LBV).

Retrieval of driver's license
If you find the lost driving license again, you must hand it in to the LBV, as you are not allowed to have two driving license documents.
It can be handed in at any time at the information desk or by registered mail to the LBV.

Validity of driving licenses
Driver's licenses issued from January 19, 2013 are limited to a validity of fifteen years. After the validity has expired, a new issue is required. Driving licenses issued before January 19, 2013 must be exchanged by January 19, 2033 at the latest.

Procedure & Fees

Procedure

The application is made on site. The LBV will deliver the new driving license by registered mail to the registration address of the person applying. If there is no notification of loss from the German police when you apply to the customer center, the new driving license will be collected from the LBV. In the course of collection, an additional affidavit must be submitted. In this case, the fee is increased by the cost of the affidavit.

Processing time

After the driver's license has been issued by the Bundesdruckerei Berlin, it will be sent to you by registered mail within three months.

If there is no notification of loss from the police when you apply, the driver's license must be collected from the LBV. In this case, you will receive a notification as soon as the driver's license is ready for collection.

Fees

The fees are between EUR 46.50 and EUR 72.40 . The exact expense amount can only be determined after submission of the complete documents. The basis for this is the scale of charges for road traffic measures (GebOSt).
