Certificate of technical expertise in radiation protection

Detailed description

If you want to work with ionizing radiation or radioactive materials, you need the necessary expertise in radiation protection.


The following people must possess this expertise:

  • Those responsible for radiation protection in facilities
  • Radiation protection officer
  • Medical physics experts
  • Doctors or dentists who use radiation or radioactive substances on humans
  • Doctors or dentists who determine how this application should be carried out.
  • Veterinarians who use radiation or radioactive substances in veterinary medicine

If you have passed the specialist knowledge examination, you will receive a certificate, for example, from the Office for Occupational Safety, the Medical Association, the Dental Association or the Veterinary Association.


To obtain the certificate of competence, you must submit a written application to the relevant authority and provide the required documentation.

Prerequisites

  • They have knowledge about types of radiation, radiation effects, and radiation protection.
  • They are safe in handling radiation sources.
  • They know the regulations for the protection of people, animals and the environment and comply with them.
  • They handle radioactive materials correctly and dispose of them properly.
  • They have knowledge of dosimetry and radiation dose limitation.
  • You have participated in a recognized training or further education course in radiation protection.
  • You have passed the examination at the relevant authority, such as the Office for Occupational Safety, the Medical Association, the Dental Association or the Veterinary Association.

Documents required

  • Certificates of suitable training (proof of training, master craftsman's certificate, university degree)
  • Evidence of practical experience (Qualified Certificate of Competence)
  • Certificate of successful participation in the required radiation protection courses
  • Proof of practical experience and knowledge

Please note

  • The Authority for Justice and Consumer Protection, Office for Occupational Safety, is responsible for issuing certificates of expertise in the technical field and for medical physics experts.
  • The Hamburg Medical Association is responsible for issuing certificates of expertise for physicians (human medicine).
  • The Hamburg Dental Association is responsible for issuing certificates of expertise for dentists.
  • The Hamburg Chamber of Veterinary Surgeons is responsible for issuing certificates of expertise for veterinarians.

Procedure

  • You apply for the certificate of competence with the required documents at the responsible authority. You can use an application form or submit an informal, written application.
  • The responsible authority will review your application and documents. If necessary, they will request further documents or information from you.
  • The relevant authority will decide on your application.
  • You will receive a notification.
  • You will receive a fee notice.
  • They pay the fees.

Processing time

Processing usually takes 2-4 weeks.

Fees

Fees apply. These fees also apply if you do not receive the certificate of competence. The amount of the fees is calculated based on the time spent.

The acquisition of the necessary specialist knowledge in radiation protection is checked by the respective responsible body (Office for Occupational Safety, Medical Association, Dental Association, Veterinary Association). If the test is positive, a corresponding certificate will then be issued.
